Grand Prix @ Cannes; Producer’s Wet Dream!

by Max Brady

Well I waited until after the weekend to blog, as I wanted to see what might have won at the Cannes Film Festival, advertising. I was quite disappointed. The Grand Prix, the Philips Carousel 2:19 spot, which of course, we blogged before, is deserving of the main prize. But flippin hell, some of the entries! One or two were entertaining. Quite a few were just awful, and some were really old. But this baby did it for me when it first broke, so here it is again! A producer’s wet dream, toys and fun galore!

Oh and I’m still convinced that the cop at the beginning, is very George Clooney – esque.

Well…..

by Max Brady

…according to Adrants, this is the world’s worst commercial right now. I must admit that I’ve seen it now on a couple of sites and it is pretty dreadful. This blog shouldn’t always be about the best production spots out there, but sometimes about the truly dreadful.
I can’t slag off the production standards, and anyway, that’s not really what this blog is about, slagging. But good God! Who thought that this was a good idea? What does the pay off have to do with the product, three viewings before I worked out what it was advertising. This is how not to do advertising, viral, above the line or otherwise! Seriously!

Interesting Times We Live In.

by Max Brady

I saw this last night, channel surfing. I do sometimes still watch TV. This made me smile, and I’m sorry RTE, but it does the job so much more effectively than the little graphics campaign that you have been running. So many good commercials in here. But it is interesting that all of the UK’s commercial television stations have all got together to fight back. That’s all very well, but there are a lot of clients out there, who just aren’t spending! But while we wait for them to get their acts together, we can enjoy some of the greats!

Get An Extra Day Off.

by Max Brady

There was quite a lot of international material to choose from today, seems to be quite a bit of new work happening Internationally, the US, UK, France, Italy and New Zealand all seem to be making some very nice ads, one in particular I’ll put up tomorrow, just because it a) resonated with me, and b) it’s one of those ones again that shows how production can really be something that you really have to think about. But for now, dumdedumdum, (is that how you spell it?), I liked this one for Las Vegas Tourism.

I’ve always wanted to go to Las Vegas, seems like my sort of city, a party town with sunshine and all of that, so this is an interesting way of convincing people to go there. No beauty shots, no big helicopter sweeps with a kick ass track, just a really good performance from the employee, and a strong script. I especially like the expression on the face of the Chincilla when he pushes that detonator plunger! (I do seem to be developing a theme here of puppets, animatronics and things considered cute, perhaps I need to look at that.)

Enjoy

Nike’s Most Valuable Puppets

by Max Brady

Puppeteering is a skill, something we don’t see so much of in this modern world. We used to watch the Muppets, Thunderbirds, Spitting Image, I loved Sunday nights waiting to see Maggie Thatcher in all her moulded polyfoam glory, but there doesn’t seem to be so many puppet shows around these days, or maybe they’re just not in my viewing radar.

But I digress! The emotion and expression that these puppeteers manage to get into the characters is fantastic, and then add to that how they have captured exactly how annoying a small, enthusiastic, over excited child can be. I know there is a whole series of them, but this one does it for me. Great work! Great sets and attention to detail, makes me smile every time.
